Strolling through millions of years - nature and deep time walk - Derrybawn, 19 August

€15.00

This Heritage Week, Join Anthea from Nature Tales & Trails for a walk through millions of years. In this guided walk, we will explore nature, flowers, trees, and Earth's foundations and 4.5 billion year old deep time history. We will walk along easy forest trails in Glendalough, with various stops along the way, imagining what Ireland was like in the past, during the evolutionary history of our island, and noticing nature along the way. From oceans, to mosses, plants, volcanoes, corals, sea lilies, tetrapods, dinosaurs, and ice ages, we will reflect on the immense span of geological time, and the colourful variety life forms that lived and went extinct over time.

We will cover:

  • The basics of geology and the geological processes shaping the landscape in Ireland.

  • The rock cycle, geological timescale, the geological history of Ireland, evolution and fossils, how rocks form layers and the basic principles of superposition of rocks, as well as how glaciation has affected the landscape.

About me: My name is Anthea Lacchia, and I'm a geologist, mountain leader and writer. I have a PhD on Ireland's fossils and work as a science communicator and hiking guide.

Details

Start time: 4pm. Meeting point will be emailed to you before the event.

The walk is on flat ground, in the Derrybawn and Glendalough area, and about 3 hours in length and 8km in total.

This event is run as part of Heritage Week.
